The Bunsen Burner is a piece of equipment used to heat things in the science laboratory.
It burns gas and was invented in 1855 by Robert Bunsen.

bunsen1bunsen2Air hole closed
Flame is yellow, smoky and luminous

Air hole open
Flame is hot, blue and roaring
Do not heat things in the pale blue area as it is not so hot
The hottest part of the flame is just above the pale blue cone.

Notes:
When not being used to heat things leave the air closed so that there  is a luminous flame (which is easier to see).
Always light the Bunsen burner with the air-hole closed
